The Auteur: Film Interpretation and Criticism

Instructor Bio (Online registration: class is in the Music, Arts & Crafts category) What makes a good film, or a great film? Who are the great film makers/auteurs of today? From Spike Lee to Martin Scorsese, from Sofia Coppola to Baz Luhrmann, we will study eight current or very recent past directors and view a film from each. We will evaluate perspective, narrative, script, dialogue, style, production values, music, cinematography, art direction, etc. How does Martin Scorsese edit as compared to David Lynch? How does Spike Lee portray NYC as compared to the romantic Manhattan of Woody Allen? Who uses music to its best advantage, Lynch or Lee, Scorsese or Coppola? Hopefully, the films and film critiques will foster a lively debate and an exciting and stimulating class!! (Eight weeks starting Sep 18. No class Oct 30.)
