Foreign Language Classes

indicates State supported.| A variety of classes in foreign languages is offered this quarter. Beginning courses introduce correct pronunciation and basic vocabulary. Intermediate and Advanced classes develop the ability to speak, read, write and think in the language. Speaking is emphasized at all levels through conversation on everyday subjects and travel situations. Classes start the week of September 8th for 10 weeks if fully enrolled. Text generally required. Arabic, Beginning Multi-LevelInstructor Bio/Class Details This course for beginners and continuing students provides a more in-depth introduction and foundation to Arabic study with conversation drills, vocabulary, basic grammar and writing exercises. Part of each session will be focused on conversation in formal, literary Arabic - the universal language form that is spoken and written by all Arabic speakers.
FrenchBeginning French 1 class is for people who have never taken French or who haven taken it so long ago they would like to start fresh. The class focuses on pronunciation, basic grammar, overall comprehension through reading and practicing conversation in typical scenarios.
Beginning French 2 is for people who feel they already have a grasp of very basic grammar, conversation and vocabulary and wish to improve. This includes students who have taken Beginning 1 French. The focus is on improving pronunciation, gaining ease with speaking, learning more complex grammar and reading short texts.
In the Intermediate French class, the student will be reading a novella or short story throughout the class. Students gain a firmer and subtler grasp of grammar. We decide as a class which areas are most useful to review and practice. Students start to write short compositions and learn to pronounce and speak with confidence.
The Advanced French class develops the ability to speak, read, write and think in the language. Speaking is emphasized through conversation on everyday subjects and travel situations.
GermanInstructor Bio Beginning German introduces students to basic grammar and vocabulary in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Students begin conversing with one another in the first class meeting, learning via the "communicative" or "natural" method, which the instructor supplements with additional cultural material. We use the college text Kontakte and, in the first year of Beginning German, work our way through the first half.
Intermediate German continues through the second half of Kontakte, growing and deepening students' knowledge of grammar, while expanding vocabulary at an increasing rate. We also begin to read some literature in the form of fairy tales and poetry, as well as occasionally viewing relevant films, in order to expand the cultural component of the course. By the end of the Intermediate year, students should feel confident to travel in German-speaking countries that they can understand and be understood in basic communicative situations.
ItalianInstructor/Class Info In my four courses I teach colloquial, contemporary Italian through conversation and review, some basic grammar and educational entertainment (videos, music, recipes etc...). Each course usually ends with an Italian potluck dinner.Level 1 Beginning covers chapters Preliminary-3 of Studio Italiano. Grammar points include nouns, articles, adjectives and present tense. The vocabulary ranges from numbers, greetings and days of the week to school, family, home and travel. The readings consist mainly of brief conversations taking place in Italian schools, coffee shops, restaurants, hotels, trains, etc. Some educational videos will be shown in class. No previous knowledge of the language is necessary.
Level 2 Beginning covers chapters 4-6 in Studio Italiano. Grammar points include possessive adjectives, espressioni with avere, irregular verbs, past tense. The vocabulary focuses on weather, food, school and geography. The readings consist mainly of conversations among family members, friends and tourists. Some educational videos will be shown in class. Pre-requisite: Beginning Level 1 or equivalent.
Level 1 Intermediate covers chapters 10-12 in Studio Italiano. Grammar points include: future, conditional, double pronouns. The vocabulary focuses on travel, jobs, shopping. Besides the textbook readings, we will regularly talk about current events and we will watch and discuss in class either one opera or one Italian movie. Pre-requisite: Beginning Level 3 or equivalent.
Level 3 Intermediate covers chapters 16-18 in Studio Italiano. Grammar points include: subjunctive, passive construction, expressions with fare. The vocabulary focuses on art, music, politics, social issues. Besides the textbook readings, we will regularly talk about current events and will watch and discuss in class both one opera and one Italian movie. Pre-requisite: Intermediate Level 2 or equivalent.
Italian for TravelersInstructor Bio This course focuses on Italian basics. Learn beginning language skills and culture for those interested in travel or those simply interested in the Italian experience. We will use dialogs, conversation, music and readings to develop basic grammar, speaking and listening skills. Topics can include food, wine, art, literature and more according to your interests.
